Men’s Loafers | The Perfect Summer Shoe
Tumblr media
As we look forward to the Summer months and the prospect of holidays whether it be local or travelling abroad our footwear choices change with the men’s loafer being a obvious selection. A slip on staple across the Barker shoe collections for the Spring / Summer seasons, the loafer and/or moccasin is a lace less favourite that can be worn in many ways. From Tassel Loafers to accompany suiting at weddings or formal events to casual Penny Loafers worn with T-Shirt and shorts, the Barker Loafer collection is extensive.
Tumblr media
The origins of the loafer trace back to the London-based bespoke shoe company Wildsmith Shoes who designed a slip on shoe for King George VI as a casual house shoe. The Wildsmith Loafer was designed by Raymond Lewis Wildsmith and has subsequently been sold by other London shoe companies under the name ‘Harrow’.
Tumblr media
Other origins of the loafer takes us to Scandinavia where Aurland-based shoemaker Nils Gregoriusson Tveranger designed a loafer in 1908 that was originally worn by Norwegian farmers. In 1930, Tveranger developed his design having been inspired by Native American footwear and named his creation the Aurland Moccasin which became popular throughout Europe.
In 1934, Maine-based shoemaker G.H Bass made a Tveranger inspired loafer and named it Weejun in homage to its Norwegian heritage. This G.H. Bass reinterpretation became penny loafer style we adore today as the colloquial Penny Loafer name was introduced in 1950s America when the Weejun became the shoe of choice for college students who thought it fashionable to keep a dime in the half moon cut out slot of the leather strip.
Tumblr media
Barker loafers for men feature in several of the Barker collections including the Handcrafted, Creative and Professional collections. A firm favourite across the Barker collections is the Penny Loafer with the Caruso being a notable Goodyear welted style made in the Barker shoe factory located in Earls Barton, Northampton (England). The Caruso is the longest running Barker style having been introduced in the early 1960s. Designed by a member of the Barker family, Albert Barker took inspiration from the American Ivy League classic making the Caruso on the number 10 last from polished leather on a full leather sole. Available in Black and Burgundy Hi-Shine the Caruso is a timeless classic that can be worn dressed up or down depending on the occasion. The Caruso is the archival style behind the BOEB Archive collection Mear Penny Loafer except this is made from premium fine grain and suede leather on a British Dainite rubber sole.
Popular Barker Penny loafers include the Gates (BarkerTech collection), Jevington (Handcrafted collection) and Portsmouth (Professional collection) which are made from a variety of premium calf and suede leathers on a choice of leather or Dainite rubber soles. Another slip on staple within the Barker shoe range is the Tassel Loafer which came to be from a commission made by the Alden Shoe Company for actor Paul Lukas  The tassel loafer is has an elegant silhouette and is available in the Barker collection in the form of the Clive, Newborough and Studland styles.
Tumblr media
The horsebit loafer is another slip on style made famous by the Italian luxury fashion house Gucci. Barker’s take on the horsebit loafer (Frank) is a recent addition to the Barker Creative collection and features a Goodyear welted construction, single leather sole and tasteful brass saddle detailing. The Barker Moccasin collection remains popular with the Doug, Jefferson, Ledley and Tony styles available in several colourways. Discover your perfect Summer shoe at Barker online.

Uhm hewwo, If you're still available about the request, I kinda wanted to request my Oc that is a cat that has orange fur, sky blue eyes, his hairstyle is like Satoshi without the hat (If you know pokemon.) His outfits are a plain purple shirt, an opened zipper of a sando hoodie (dark red), a long socks with a checkered red and black Wildsmith loafers and a half rim glasses.)
Sorry, that challenge is currently over! I did enjoy doing it though, so chances are sometime in the future I’ll open it again.

How loafers for men have evolved in recent times
How loafers for men have evolved in recent times
Story by: Jeremy Cabral
History
The basic design for loafers has its origin in the Norwegian region invented by fishermen. Travelers found them interesting, and it started trading across Europe as it gained popularity. Loafers started out as simple leather slip-on shoes with some straps on it and have evolved as a shoe suited for every occasion. Today these mens loafers are produced all…

A slip-on staple admired by a gentleman around the world, the men’s loafer may be a timeless classic that has evolved gracefully since its introduction within the 1900s. The loafer may be a lace less shoe which will be traced back to 1926 when Raymond Lewis Wildsmith of London-based bespoke shoe company Wildsmith Shoes designed a slip-on shoe for King King of Great Britain as an off-the-cuff house shoe. This bespoke shoe was initially called the 582, then the Model 98 until finally becoming called ‘The Wildsmith Loafer’.
Tumblr media
Several kinds of leather shoes for men feature within the Barker collection, made within the Earls Barton factory in Northamptonshire. the primary choice of Barker slip-on shoes is that the Penny Loafer and also the first Barker style that has got to be noted is that the Caruso, one in all the oldest Barker styles still available, Caruso is created on the amount 10 last from high-grade polished leather. The Essential Loafer Shoe Guide For Men
Tumblr media
The rise of the slip-on shoe has become apparent since the start of the COVID 19 pandemic with gentleman swapping professional staples including the traditional Oxford shoes with laceless styles that are easy to wear and offer a business casual appearance. Excluding the house slipper, there are several slip-on Barker shoes in the current collection which are essential when considering investing in styles such as a loafer, moccasin or slipper.
The most popular Barker slip-on style is men's loafer, an effortless slip-on with certain designs having an impressive history behind them. A menswear classic is the Penny loafer which has several historical origins, firstly in London where a bespoke shoe company called Wildsmith Shoes designed a slip-on shoe for King George VI as a casual house shoe. Designed by Raymond Lewis Wildsmith the bespoke design was called the ‘Wildsmith Loafer’ and has subsequently been sold by other London shoe firms under the name ‘Harrow’.

All about Different Types of Loafer Shoes for Men
Men love shoes. The personality of men somehow depends on the shoes that they wear. Today in this modern age, some old fashioned stereotype shoe can go against the style of the men but in the deep inside, most of the men are just passionate about the footwear. Men always have strong opinions on brands and styles for different festivals along with their dress and shoe that could get correct according to the occasion. They must have calculated decisions about their day to day wearing and seasons.
But while men are thinking about wearing some luxury footwear which is sophisticated in appearance, easy to put on yet comfortable to wear, loafers come first. Loafer shoes for men are shoes which do not require any fastening or lacing system and can be easily slipped into the footwear. Thus, sometimes they are also termed as slip-ones with a low heel or no heel. However, not only men, even women and children can do style in casual and fashionable wear.
History & Inspiration of Loafers:
The design and construction of loafers were based on the moccasins which were worn by Native Americans. However, the style of today’s loafer hugely varied but some of the styles are very dressy and also holding little similarity to its original form. Basically Moccasins have a lace across the top but do not have any separate heel or never have a heel. In the 1930s, an American Company started calling the moccasins as loafers. G. H. Bass added a strip of leather across the top with diamond-shaped cut-out typical of penny loafers which were then termed as Weejuns.
Wildsmith Shoes of London for King George VI made Wildsmith Loafer as a country house shoe. This design was copied by other companies and sold as the name Harrow. Again, the 1960s, Gucci take another further step and added a metal strap to the top. After that those footwear was acceptable with the business-wear dress.
Types of Loafer Shoes for Men:
Now, over the few years some of the most famous styles of men’s loafer shoes are:
Penny Loafers: It has a leather strap across the forefoot with diamond-shaped slot big enough o held penny. This style is popular men’s loafer shoe since the 1950s.
Gucci Loafers: Loafer with a Brass Strap in black introduced by Gucci to make it suitable for business-wear.
Tassel Loafers: Alden Shoe Company has developed a slip-on style of decorative lace with tassels on the top that was popularized by Brooks Brothers.
Moc Loafers: Similar to traditional moccasins, Moc loafers have overcast stitching.

eBay Roundup
Twice a week, we round up the best of menswear on eBay so that our readers don’t have to. For an additional roundup, along with a list of each week’s best sales, subscribe to our Inside Track newsletter.
My favorite items in today’s roundup are these Ghurka bags -- the Expediter, Examiner, and Courier No. 8. They were made back in the heydays of the company, when Marley Hodgson owned the brand and everything was manufactured in the USA. The company has since passed hands a few times, and some of what was once off-shored has now been brought back, but I still think the vintage stuff feels the nicest. The leathers back then just felt heavier and had more of an interesting character.
To find up more menswear gems, try using our customized eBay search links. We’ve made them so you can quickly hone-in on high-end suits, good suits, high-quality shirts and fine footwear.

The history of the Penny Loafer
The history of the loafer has several origins firstly in London where bespoke shoe company Wildsmith Shoes designed a slip-on shoe for King George VI as a casual house shoe. The design by Raymond Lewis Wildsmith was called ‘The Wildsmith Loafer’ and has subsequently been sold by other London shoe firms under the name ‘The Harrow’.

Secondly, the loafer can be traced back to Norwegian farmers where Aurland-based shoemaker Nils Gregoriusson Tveranger introduced his first design in 1908. Aged 13, Tveranger travelled to North America to study the craft of shoemaking before returning to Norway aged 20.

In 1930, Tveranger developed a design inspired by Native American footwear and a moccasin-like shoe traditionally worn by the workers of his fjord-side home. The ‘Aurland Moccasin’ became known throughout Europe and visiting Americans brought the shoes home as souvenirs.

In 1934 Maine-based shoemaker G.H. Bass launched its version of Tveranger’s shoe, named the Weejun in homage to its Norwegian origins.
By the mid-century the loafer was championed by US men’s bibles Esquire and Apparel Arts, worn by sartorialists and college students alike. It’s believed the term ‘ Penny Loafer’ came from American prep school students who wishing to make a fashion statement, took to inserting a penny into the diamond-shaped slit on their Weejuns. The inserted coins would be enough money to make an emergency phone call at the time.
The Penny Loafer today remains a menswear icon, championed by the Ivy League of yesteryear, its classic and refined styling makes it effortless to wear both for formal and/or casual occasions.
